The futuristic electric Peugeot 3008, which was shown at the end of last year, has already made great promises to many fans. But be careful not to take it all at face value.
Even if it is in relatively poor condition due to its age, the Peugeot 3008 remains a very homogeneous car. At this 4.45m long - considered a great size for everyday life - and behind a flattering silhouette, the French offers a modern and somewhat welcoming body and cabin.
It underscores outstanding impressions on the road with its dynamism and agility still above average, with respect to comfort really. This is an excellent tuning that ultimately lacks only one component: a 100% electric variant.
Never mind, the upcoming high-end 3008, which was unveiled at the end of 2023, will have its "zero emissions" version! There was no doubt about it, but Lion forced it through the product plan I showed off this week for all electric models of the far and near future. Silhouette, but also characters, even if it is necessary to settle promises.
Big promise of autonomy, but beware
The first PEUGEOT modal built on the Stellantis range's STLA medium platform, the 3008 electric motor will, according to its product, offer a range of 700 kilometers of autonomous driving. A distinct goal that should, for several reasons, be put into perspective.
First of all, let's rely on the traditional gap between producer numbers, which results from approval of the European WLTP cycle, and valid numbers. From what is available in our independent checks, you need to shell out about 30%.
In real life, you'd probably have to focus on a range of around 500km on a single charge in mixed urban/suburban use. On the highway, it should be difficult to go over 400 km. For comparison, these are roughly the numbers we achieved with the specially studied air-penetrating Mercedes EQE which uses an 89 kWh battery.
Battery baby to go away
In the case of the e-3008, needless to say, the whole will also be of the fat type. If we stick to the 12.7kWh/100km rate that Assad is targeting for these new generation electric cars, the e-3008's battery should reach 90kWh in hopes of getting new free kilometers and traveling 700km.
So according to what is going on and presented by Peugeot Van, keep track of the last two pieces of information: Peugeot e-3008 will be heavy and Peugeot e-3008 will be expensive. And this is due to the weight of a 90 kWh battery that weighs about 600 kg. With this battery, other companies such as the Mercedes EQE also provided it to 2390 kg on our Montlhéry scale ...
the car and improved its behavior with regard to some temperatures. On the other hand, Peugeot has to work twice as hard as its predecessor to offer a bit of dynamism and flexibility to this five-seater SUV that should logically exceed two tons.
the price
In addition, the battery still accounts for 40% of the price of an electric vehicle, and the price of the e-3008 will be relatively high. With the 180hp plug-in hybrid starting today at €44,000, it wouldn't be counterintuitive to see an all-electric version starting at over €50,000.
As it is, it would not even be entitled to a CO bonus ... unless the version with a smaller battery is the entry level, but then it would be necessary to count on an autonomy below the previous figures given here.
Therefore, there are many unknowns and unknowns, for this electric future 3008 even if customers can also rely on petrol and hybrid.
