The mighty 4×4 U8 promises to be one of the most expensive and powerful models on the Chinese market.
BYD languished in the midfield for years. The electric market boom now makes it a leading player as it sold 911,140 electric cars and added plug-in hybrids in 2022, selling a total of 1,863,494 cars.
Not bad for a brand that just surpassed 700,000 sales in 2021... Their ambitions don't stop there and BYD wants to confirm its role as Chinese champion by targeting the high-end. The VERY high end. The new Yangwang brand is expected to sell cars for more than 1 million yuan (US$150,000).
A price now unattainable for Chinese brands, with the exception of Hongqi sedans reserved for the elite.
Yangwang's first model announces the color. For the U8, it's not about discretion or half measures. This large 4×4, designed by Wolfgang Egger, showcases the brand's styling philosophy, dubbed the 'Gateway to Time and Space'.
Impressive already by its dimensions (5.30 m length, 3.05 m wheelbase), it looks more like a large SUV than an SUV like a Range Rover or a Land Cruiser.
Everything is decorated with many flourishes that do not brighten the whole: cluttered headlights and lamps, "aerodynamic" decorations on the wheel arches or the D-pillar. We won't miss the three lidars on the roof either...

4×4 with supercar characteristics
For its new brand, BYD has pulled out all the stops with an all-new split-chassis platform called the e4. 4 as it is the first four-motor electric car platform developed in China.
Four cars used by BYD with a variety of functions, some seen on other models, some never seen before: crawling, turning on the spot, holding the vehicle in the event of a flat tire or a tire explosion up to 120 km/h in total. Stop from 100 km/h in 40 meters in case of brake or steering failure...
With IP68 protection for the motors and waterproof bodywork, BYD claims its massive SUV can float in water and move forward, again powered by its four motors.
Of course, the manufacturer states that you shouldn't venture into a lake or the open sea, but that the Yangwang U8 can, for example, cross a river... In this function, the Yangwang U8 beats the Cybertruck by far.
In numbers, each engine develops 220 kW to 240 kW and 320 to 420 Nm - a cavalry that accelerates this monster from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds.
Not a word about the quantity, not about the autonomy. For the batteries he will of course use homemade blades...
